Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are there free trial classes, drop-in classes, or can I attend class every now and then? We’re so sorry and with all due respect, no. If you start classes with that idea in mind, you will not see your dance progress. Each class builds off the previous one and that’s how you will become successful in your craft. Our classes are designed for those who want to improve their skills without a demanding dance class schedule.

  • How soon will is see my progress in learning flamenco? Flamenco is one of the most complicated dance forms to study. It will be a year or two before you can fully understand the concepts, break a sweat or even like what you see in the mirror! Only those who have patience with this slow initial process and themselves survive this period. The first few classes are awkward, frustrating and slow. You have to be patient because it is more of a mental challenge than a physical one. For this reason, it is not advisable to drop in whenever you feel like it because it is not the type of dance form that you can quickly “pick up”. It requires a steadfast dedication and commitment to not only attend class consistently but to make time to practice and review on your own. You will get out of these classes what you put into it. We have created a wonderful community of students and artists that are supportive and encouraging of one another in this difficult yet rewarding journey. We have great fun learning, laughing, and enjoying ourselves. We can’t wait for you to join us!

  • What should I wear to class? Form fitting clothes such as tank tops, leotards, along with leggings or joggers/track pants with a skirt are recommended. Loose fitting clothes make proper body placement, lines and form difficult to see. Please do not attend class in casual clothing or work attire as this is not permitted.

  • Do I need to purchase flamenco shoes? Flamenco shoes are an investment for all. Only purchase shoes if you’re committed to classes. See ABOVE for places to purchase. For your first few classes you can wear closed-toe shoes such as dress shoes or boots with sturdy heels, or character shoes. Stiletto shoes and sneakers are not recommended. Email us if you need further assistance.

  • How often should I attend class? The classes are structured in such a way that the student gets the most out of their experience and are able to progress at a faster rate. Continuous monthly class registration is vital for you develop retention, stamina, and consistency.

  • Can I change clothes at La Capitana? Yes, but it is encouraged to arrive at the studio ready to go for class prior to entering the studio. Bathroom/changing space is limited so it’s best to arrive ready to dance.

  • What time do I arrive for class? Students should arrive approximately 5-10 minutes prior to the start of class. We recommend you arrive dressed to save as much time as possible. To ensure each class runs on time, students are expected to depart 5-10 minutes at the conclusion of each class so the following class may run smoothly. This is strictly enforced.

  • If I am running late, how late can I enter? All students must be in the studio and ready at the start of their class. It is vital to arrive on time not only because class time is limited, but in order to prevent injuries. If late, wait for the exercise in progress to be over before quietly taking an open place in a manner that will not disturb the class.

  • Are classes open to observation? No. La Capitana has a policy of no observation by outside guests, parents, or kids as it is disruptive to both the teacher and the students.

  • Can I bring drinks or food into the studio? Absolutely no gum, food, or drink, other than water in a sealed container, is allowed inside the studio.

  • Student performances? Students are encouraged to participate in the annual showcase that takes place each year. Students perform in traditional attire for friends and family to showcase what they’ve been working on throughout the year and strut their stuff while enjoying libations and appetizers.

  • Do you have videos I can use to practice? Can I video/audio record what we’ve done in class? Unfortunately, there is to be no video or audio recording of any class.

  • Do you offer private instruction? Yes, we offer private and semi-private instruction on a first-come first-served basis to cater to your particular needs, whether it is to mount a choreography, work out kinks in a choreography you already have, a quinceañera, a couple’s wedding dance, a competition, mommy-and-me, etc. Please email for details and rates will vary depending on your needs.
